Some Prayers to Live By October 20, 2007

Prayer of St. Francis Assisi
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned. It is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

St. Francis

Prayer of Mother Teresa
Dear God, help us to spread your fragrance everywhere we go, flood our souls with your Spirit and life. Penetrate and possess our whole being so utterly that our lives may only be a radiance of yours.

Shine through us and be so in us that every soul we come in contact with may feel your presence in our soul. Let them look up and see no longer us but only God.

Stay with us and then we shall begin to shine as you shine, so to shine as to be light to others. The light, O God, will be all from you. None of it will be ours. It will be your shining on others through us. Let us thus praise you in the way you love best by shining on those around us. Amen

Serenity Prayer by Reinhold Niebuhr
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time; enjoying one moment at a time; accepting hardship as the pathway to peace.

Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it; trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His will; that I may be reasonably happy in this life, and supremely happy with Him in the next. Amen.

Do you have to believe in God to pray?

What “God” means to me could be entirely different to what it means to you. For some people, God is a word that describes an older bearded white man. For others, God is considered more like a higher power or universal life force. It doesn’t really matter what you believe, because prayer is about invoking or summoning your vision to become manifest in the world. Whatever belief works for you, works.

What is My Prayer For Life all about?

Every religion in the world began with a simple message about how to live life and what it means to exist on this earth. We do not endorse or promote any one specific faith, but we do have some ideas about how to live a spiritually rich life. For us, it is the practice of prayer that counts, not the religious doctrine.

Prayer means different things to different people. Some other words for prayer that I like to use are: meditation, intention, contemplation, and visualization. Prayer is at its root and creative and positive force.

What do you think of when you think of prayer?

Perhaps you were brought up to say a prayer before a meal or before going to sleep. Or perhaps you have never prayed before in your life. I myself have practiced some form of prayer in several different denominations, and I have come to believe that it is as vital and necessary to life as the air you breathe and the food you eat. Everyone can benefit from prayer, in both big and small ways.

There are many learned religious traditions, and with them, many different approaches to prayer. No matter what your tradition or background, I believe that prayer is accessible to every living being and there is no right or wrong way to do it. I suggest that you use a notebook or journal to record whatever thoughts and experiences come up for you on your journey.
